My art is deeply influenced by nature, by the ebb and flow of ancient life forces that have sustained and nourished life since the dawn of time. I am drawn to wild places, where I immerse in the rhythm of the land, walking barefoot, leaving my trail across the dry earth. Looking up towards a night sky, absorbed in a cosmic dance of light and dark and spiraling images that draw the imagination as warm water over smooth rocks. A v-shaped image trails across the eternal blue as ibis’s return to roost. The parched grasses bend to an evening breeze. Seed pods on a thorny branch. The primal self immersed in the landscape, following the contours of hills and gullies, of hidden kloofs. Tracing the shapes of plants, stones, bits of weathered bone, crushed wood in splinters on the ground. Colours fuse, separate, merge, and the horizon seems infinite. Ancient images scratched across rock surfaces. The wind stirs the land, whispering words from afar. Reminding. Remembering.

….even the language he spoke was a feeling language, expressing reality not in ideas, calculation and abstraction so much as through the feelings provoked in him…. (Laurens van der Post)

When I paint, I love to listen to Ayub Ogada’s soulful album ‘En Mana Kuoyo’, it evokes a feeling of being back in Kenya, my spiritual home, of sitting under the acacia trees on Lake Naivasha, eyes closed, feeling the sun on my skin, absorbing the sounds of fish eagles, hippo’s bickering in the shallows, and all things wild and magical…
